Following the Thai army-imposed martial law that was called on May 20th, the natural response is anxiety when it comes to our tourists' booked or anticipated ferry trips to Phuket, Phi Phi, Lanta or Krabi.
PhuketFerry can understand that when you are on the other side of the world and watching the media how concern can rise, so let us give you the good news:
All is well.
No ferry trip or Phuket Ferry destination is affected, whether it is Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Ao Nang, or Koh Lanta - none of them. In fact, you would not know that anything was happening at all unless you switched on the TV at the regular news hour and saw the main news stories that are predominantly happening inside buildings or on a few key roads in the local area (very peacefully in general). Nope, the Krabi mainland and Phuket/Phi Phi locals are going to work, shopping, running tours and operating ferries under sunny and cloudy skies just like any other day in the year or season.
However, in case you are still anxious and thinking that we are simply looking on the bright side of things, here are some official quotes from some of the key people in the local martial law operation:
“In Phuket, protesters are not violent, so the martial law order is nothing to panic about... The law giving the Army the right to declare martial law was established in 1914. The purpose is to maintain peace... I would like to urge tourists not to worry about martial law. Please enjoy your holidays here in Phuket
.” (Phuket Vice Governor Sommai)
“I don’t think it [the martial law enforcement] will have a significant effect in Phuket, because we do have many direct flights to our island from other nations.” (Phuket Vice Governor Sommai)
"Don’t worry about the martial law... Just live your life normally. We are your peacekeepers.” (Unnamed local officer at the Third Naval Area Command, Phuket)
In summary, please do not let news media exaggeration affect your potential dream experiences in Thailand. Phuket, Phi Phi, and all of the other amazing places you will be able to travel to via Phuket Ferry are OPEN FOR BUSINESS, and staying amazing just so your experience will be just that - amazing.
Blessings from us,
Phuket Ferry Team.
