Koh Phangan is located in Surat Thani Province just 12 km away from Koh Samui and 70 km from the mainland. The island’s name is derived from the word “Ngan” which means “sandbar” due to the many sandbars located offshore.

Phangan with its unspoiled beauty, golden beaches, and turquoise water has over 20 nearby dive sites. One of the best diving sites around Koh Phangan is Sail Rock, it’s about one-hour boat ride from the island and it’s full of whale sharks, barracuda, and manta rays. This diving site is suitable for all divers.

Koh Phangan’s fame is due to its famous full moon parties which attract from 10k to 30k travelers on New Year’s Eve. The party takes place every full moon on Haad Rin Beach so prepare yourself to party until sunrise.

You can get around the island by the local Thai bus “Songthaew”, rental jeeps, motorcycles, pickup trucks, or hiring a private taxi.

From Krabi Town to Koh Phangan by plane

Koh Phangan doesn’t have an airport yet, the airport is still under construction. The nearest airport to Phangan is Koh Samui Airport, the airport has flights from Phuket, Singapore, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur.

From Krabi Town to Koh Phangan by bus/minivan + boat

There is no direct trip from Krabi Town to Phangan, you will have to book a combined bus/minivan + boat ticket to get to the island. The main piers on Koh Phangan are Thong Sala Pier and Haad Rin Pier, but mostly when you’re coming from Krabi Town, Thong Sala Pier will be your arrival point and you will find plenty of banks and ATM machines.

From Thunglong Road to Thong Sala Pier

This trip starts with a bus/minivan trip from Thunglong Road in Krabi Town to Tapee Pier in Surat Thani. The bus/minivan trip takes around  to reach Surat Thani. From Tapee Pier you’ll take a ferry to reach Koh Phangan in . This trip costs  and the price includes both bus/minivan trip and the ferry trip.

From Krabi Sea Pearl to Thong Sala Pier

This trip also starts with a bus/minivan trip from Krabi Sea Pearl in Krabi Town to Donsak Pier in Surat Thani. The bus/minivan trip will take about  to reach Donsak Pier. From the pier, you’ll also take a ferry to Koh Phangan. The ferry trip takes around  and the whole trip costs .

Best time to visit

The ideal time to visit Koh Phangan is from December to March. When the sea is high, clean, and perfect for diving, swimming, and any other water activities. If you’re seeking low accommodation prices and great deals then April to June are the perfect months for you as they tend to be the quietest months of the year.
