Known as the “Turtle Island”, Koh Tao is an important breeding ground for green turtles and hawksbill. The island’s economy is centered on tourism, especially scuba diving and snorkeling, as well as rock climbing, bouldering, and hiking. Tao island now offers some of the best scuba diving sites in all of Thailand’s Gulf. Divers also go there in search of bull sharks and whale sharks.

From Koh Phi Phi to Koh Tao by Bus and Ferry

From Tonsai Pier to Mae Haad Pier through Tapee Pier

Both destinations are islands and the only way to get to them is through the sea. But there is no direct ferry from Phi Phi islands to Tao island. The most popular and the cheapest way to getting to Koh Tao from Koh Phi Phi is the boat & bus combined ticket.

From Phi Phi’s main pier “Tonsai Pier” the ferry will take you to Krabi in X hours, from Krabi a bus/minivan will be waiting to take you to Surat Thani’s pier “Tapee Pier” in 8 Hrs, and from the pier you’ll be taking another ferry straight to Tao’s Mae Haad Pier in 8 Hrs. This combined ticket costs 1,750 THB.

From Tonsai Pier to Mae Haad Pier through Donsak Pier

This route is slightly different from the one mentioned above. Instead of taking the ferry from Tapee Pier in Surat Thani, you’ll take the ferry from Donsak Pier in Surat Thani. This trip is a little bit longer than the previous one because the trip from Krabi to Donsak Pier is 8 Hrs. This is also a boat & bus combined ticket and it costs 1,750 THB.

Best time to visit

Throughout the year the weather on the Turtle Island is humid and hot and the climate is tropical. The temperature ranges between 27°C and 33°C. The best time to visit the island is from July to August and from December to March.
