The Rama VIII Bridge crosses the Chao Phraya north of Bangkok's old city, and it is one of the few pieces of modern infrastructure in the capital that people go to look at deliberately. It is a cable-stayed design carried on a single Y-shaped pylon on the Thonburi bank, with the cables fanning asymmetrically to one side — a shape chosen so that no pier stands in the historic riverscape.
The bridge opened in the early 2000s and is named for King Ananda Mahidol, Rama VIII, whose statue stands in the riverside park at its foot. That park is the usual vantage point, and the bridge is floodlit at night.
River boats pass beneath it, which makes it an easy sight to take in from the water.
